In Chapter I we examine the Old and New Testament biblical mandates for testing those who claim to be prophets. These tests are not only important for measuring the claimants of the prophetic gift, but they are also crucial for the congregation of God’s people. Failure to apply these tests is no small matter. Central to these prescribed tests is the evaluation of genuine love (Deuteronomy 13:1-5, 1 Corinthians 13) because the congregation that tolerates false prophets is one that no longer prioritizes God’s supreme word above all. In the worst of all cases, such an absence of love stands as a grave warning, or as the Apostle Paul said: “if anyone does not love the Lord, he is to be accursed” 1 Corinthians 16:22.
